How do you change a modern classic? Very carefully. For 2006, Volkswagen gave its New Beetle a styling update, though at first glance you might be hard pressed to tell exactly what's changed. But the truth is, there's a lot that's new for the 2006 model year, both inside and out. For starters, VW offers the Beetle with an innovative new 2.5-liter, 250-hp, 20-value gas engine, which the automaker describes as a 'spitfire.' The engine was first offered on the Jetta and incorporates a cylinder head design borrowed from the Lamborghini Gallaro V10. (If you have to borrow, it might as well be from the best.) Updated styling for 2006 has the Beetle's ovoid form looking a little more buffed. Fender and bumper lines are cleaner and wheel arches more sharply defined, while head and taillights are re-shaped. The result is a car with a still friendly style, but one that looks like it's been hitting the gym lately. The convertible's top is easy to fold and well insulated from wind and road noise. With its top down, the Bug has a classic but polished appearance, thanks to a top that mimics the original Beetle drop top's in appearance and handsome aluminum trim along the car's beltline. The litany of on-board safety/handling electronics now includes traction control with Anti-Slip Regulation and Electronic Differential Lock, and Electronic Stabilization Program with ABS and brake assist. Our New Beetle is not a sports car, but it's a solid handler. And the combined effect of these traction enhancements and front-wheel drive make it surefooted in snow, something that can't be said about many convertibles.
